Illnesses and Insights
Winter and autumn are great times of year, but I dread the cold and flu season that comes with the dropping temperatures. Alec has been remarkably well since last January when he had a second set of ear tubes put in and his adnoids removed. He had suffered from constant ear infections in his first two and a half years of life. I had hoped that January's surgery would be the end of the infections... and the end of the constant stream of ever-more-powerful antibiotics to make them go away.
I can't help thinking that the ear infections, Alec's strangely limited diet of chicken nuggets, pizza, french fries, chips and soda, and this disorder are all related. I know of the studies on yeast infections, leaky gut syndromes, etc. I had Alec's stool and urine checked early this year for yeast and it came up negative. Still, I can't believe that it is not all related somehow.
An interesting thing to note is that Alec, who has been sick for a week and not eating much more than soymilk, some turkey bacon and pop tarts (horrible!!!), and doses of vitamins to try to enhance his lack of good nutrician, is more focused and using great language. I can't help but wonder if a food allergy or intolerance - caused by something he has been off of for a week due to his illness - is a culprit in producing or enhancing the symptoms of an ASD disorder.
Matt and I do have an appt. (scheduled for JUNE!) to check on allergies, intolerances, and even metal toxicity levels in his system. In the meantime, we need to get him to eat! This is so hard! You can't make him. I have tried withholding the junk so he'll be hungry for the good food, but nothing seems to work. If anyone has some advice out there, please send it on!
Alec has another ear infection with this cold, by the way, and is on another antibiotic. I hate it. I asked the pediatrician about giving him some acidophilus, and so we're trying to conteract the problems associated with the killing of good bacteria in Alec's system with a supply of good bacteria in the form af acidophilus.
I'll keep you posted.
In the meantime, it's a few days until Christmas!
Alec, Elise, Matt and myself wish you all a blessed Christmas full of peace and joy... no matter your situation! May God draw near in the next year and lift you and your families in ways you have yet to imagine!
